EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Warren Avenue bridge in East Providence closed Friday night at 10 p.m. for a replacement project.
The Rhode Island Department of Transportation is replacing the deteriorating overpass that carriers Veterans Memorial Parkway to Interstate 195 West.
Warren Avenue and Exit 5 on Interstate 195 East will be closed for the weekend as part of the project.
In order to minimize the disruption to the 8,700 vehicles that cross the bridge daily, crews are using an accelerated bridge construction technique. A bridge will be built off-site, and then moved into place after the old structure is demolished.
The DOT is urging drivers looking to get on the interstate to use the on-ramp at Pawtucket Avenue in East Providence, or the on-ramp at Rout 114-A in Seekonk.
A new bridge is expected to reopen on Nov. 15.
