PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A former Boston mayor was in Providence Tuesday night to endorse former mayor of Providence, Buddy Cianci, who is hoping to win his old job back.
Former Boston Mayor Ray Flynn attended a fundraiser for Cianci that was held at the Rosario Society. The Providence mayoral candidate made his grand entrance to the Beatles’ song ‘In My Life,’ which is a song about the past and the present, and hits on a prominent theme in his attempted comeback.
Both Flynn and Cianci served simultaneously in the 1980s and have been friends ever since. In accepting the endorsement from Flynn, Cianci took aim at different corners.
“Whether it’s The Providence Journal, or whether it’s the U.S. Attorneys who don’t even live in the city of Providence – to tell you how to vote. You vote your spirit, you vote your mind, you vote on how you think can do the best job, because they’ve done it before,” he said.
Flynn fully supports Cianci, and said there’s no character issue in his mind.
“Let those of us who have never sinned, cast the first stone,” Flynn said. “You know, I take my politics from my faith. I believe in redemption, I believe in giving people an opportunity to make themselves better, and in doing so make society better.”
Republican Daniel Harrop’s campaign had no comment on the Flynn endorsement, while Democrat Jorge Elorza’s campaign did not return our request for comment.
