5K held in honor of local girl who died from H1N1

Hundreds of people attend a 5K in honor of Victoria Sousa who passed away in 2009 from H1N1 Virus.

BRISTOL (WPRI) – Hundreds of people gathered for an event in honor of a local girl who died from an illness.

The first Victoria Sousa 5K was held at Colt State Park on Saturday. Victoria was 12 years old when she passed away from the H1N1 virus in October 2009.

Her mom says they are holding the event, to bring awareness to the illness, in hopes to prevent future tragedies.

Catherine Splaine Sousa says, “We want to make sure everyone knows how important it is to get their flu vaccine, we don’t want this to happen to any other family when it can be prevented.”

Proceeds from the 5K event go to the Victoria Sousa Foundation, which provides scholarships to student-athletes who wish to attend St. Philomena School or Bay View Academy.
