Elderly clerk returns to work after violent robbery

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (WPRI) — Police continue working to identify two suspects accused of attacking and robbing an elderly store clerk in Central Falls.

According to police, the 77-year-old woman was counting money at the One Stop Convenience Store on Broad Street Sunday night when the violent crime occurred.

Police released surveillance footage of the frightening ordeal, which shows one of the suspects point what appears to be a gun at the clerk, jump over the counter, and put her in a headlock while the second suspect tries to tie her up.

The clerk put up a fight, but the violent thieves then dragged her across the store to a bathroom in the back.

The suspects stole cigarettes and money, but when a customer walked in, they immediately fled the scene.

The store was back open on Thursday, and despite suffering eight broken ribs, the woman was back on the job. Her coworker, Estela Silveira, said the clerk is afraid the suspects will come back, but had a message for them.

“Don’t do to others what you don’t want done to you.”

The store owner said the thieves made off with approximately $5,000 worth of cigarettes. Anyone with information about the crime or the suspects is asked to call the Central Falls Police Department’s Anonymous Tip Line at (401) 727-7420.
