PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – A 25 year-old man is under arrest after police say he struck and killed a motorcyclist in a hit-and-run crash late Saturday night.
According to a Providence Police Department report, the motorcycle was headed east on Plainfield Street at about 11:30 p.m. when a Honda Civic heading south on Alverson Avenue tried to turn onto Plainfield. The two vehicles collided in the intersection, and the force of the crash caused the motorcycle to mount the sidewalk and crash into the Plainfield Food Mart at 568 Plainfield Street.
The 31 year-old motorcycle driver landed on the curb in front of the building; a fire department rescue took him to Rhode Island Hospital where he was pronounced dead about half an hour later. Police did not release his name.
Police said the Honda fled the scene and headed south on Barrows Street, with the driver later abandoning the car on Union Avenue and making his way back to the scene of the crash, where police arrested him.
That driver, 25 year-old Raul Lastor Pol of Alverson Street, was charged with driving without a license and leaving the scene of an accident, death resulting. Police said he is a native of Guatemala.
The owner of the car, who also lives on Alverson Avenue, was cited by Providence police for permitting an unauthorized person to operate a motor vehicle.
