Portsmouth, Pilgrim, West Warwick are soccer champs

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (WPRI) – Portsmouth, Pilgrim and West Warwick took home championships in girls’ soccer Saturday night at Rhode Island College.

Portsmouth’s Natalie Yaw opened the scoring in the first half and then booted the game-winning penalty kick to clinch a win over Lasalle. Portsmouth became the first public school to win the Division I championship since Smithfield back in 2012 – who defeated Portsmouth that year. Lasalle has dominated Division I since 2000.

In Division II, Pilgrim and Coventry battled for the crown, with the state’s top goal scorer, Emily Manosh, putting up a goal and an assist in Pilgrim’s 2-0 victory – their first state title in 25 years.

And in Division III, the undefeated North Providence Cougars couldn’t solve the defending champion West Warwick Wizards, who scored early and held North Providence off for a 2-0 victory and back-to-back state titles.
