PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – A water main break has been repaired but the Hope Street tunnel is still closed Saturday.
Dyana Koelsh, spokeswoman for Providence Water, said Friday night that the break in a 100 year-old cast iron water main was fixed, although maintenance work still needs to be finished. Water service to about 100 customers in the area was also restored.
The leak was reported late Thursday night and caused some water to flow out of the tunnel onto Hope Street. RIPTA buses which ordinarily use the tunnel were detoured.
A RIPTA spokesperson told Eyewitness News that the tunnel must still be inspected by RIPTA crews before bus service through it is restored, although there was no immediate timetable on when those inspections would be completed.
