CHARLESTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) – Two people had to be rescued from a disabled boat Thanksgiving morning after apparently taking it for a joyride.

The Coast Guard alerted Charlestown Police about a report of a vessel in distress on Charlestown Pond, inside the breachway.

Charlestown Rescue sent out two boats and found a 22-foot boat with two people on board. The boat had run aground on shoals near Ward Island and lost hydraulics.

Neither person aboard was hurt, but were suffering from “mild hypothermia,” according to a news release.

Police determined that the two occupants did not own the boat and had taken it without the consent of the owner.

One of the two people was taken into custody by Department of Environmental Management Environmental Police officers.
