PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Winter coats are being given away at sites throughout Rhode Island as part of the state’s annual “Buy Nothing Day” on Black Friday.
The event is scheduled to take place on Friday at various sites, including the Statehouse lawn in Providence, the Blackstone Valley Visitors Center in Pawtucket, various YMCA branches and churches in Cumberland, Newport and South Kingstown. Black Friday is traditionally the year’s busiest shopping day.
Event spokesperson Greg Gerritt says the goal of the Buy Nothing Winter Coat Exchange is twofold: to provide warm coats to those who need them and to highlight the negative effects of consumerism.
Coats are also being collected at the locations.
