PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Firefighters extinguished a heavy fire showing from a porch on Ohio Avenue Friday morning.
The fire began around 10 a.m. at an apartment occupied by an elderly couple. A man, walking by the building on his way to work, helped the building’s occupants exit to safety.
“I was on my way to work, and my landlord noticed the fire and called 911,” said Hugo Ponte. “And I rushed in the house and tried to make sure everyone was out.
“There were four people in the kitchen. And one of the old ladies, they wouldn’t leave the house because of her pocket book. I basically had to pick her up and carry her to the back of the house and make sure everyone was out the house.”
Firefighters vented the roof to fight the blaze.
The elderly couple’s daughter says a cigarette on the porch started the fire. However, the exact cause remains under investigation.
