Mass. General patient tests negative for Ebola, positive for malaria

BOSTON (WPRI) — A patient at Massachusetts General Hospital suspected of being infected with Ebola has tested negative for the virus, but tested positive for malaria.

The patient, who according to the hospital was working in Liberia in a non-medical capacity, was admitted at 2 p.m. Tuesday following routine monitoring.

The hospital said the negative result was just an initial test, and more testing will need to be performed to definitively rule out Ebola. The patient is staying in a specially prepared section of the hospital out of an abundance of caution, but remains in high spirits, according to hospital officials.

The hospital stressed they’ve spent the last several months preparing for the event of a possible Ebola patient, and have followed all of the safety protocols put forth by the Centers for Disease Control.
