PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Police are investigating a woman’s death in Providence Tuesday night as a possible homicide.
According to police, the 50-year-old woman was found unresponsive inside her second-floor apartment on Quarry Street at about 8:30 p.m.
The woman’s death was initially believed to be a possible drug overdose. She was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, when EMT’s discovered what appeared to be a gunshot wound.
The state medical examiner is now investigating. Police said the case is being treated as a homicide to preserve possible evidence.
The woman’s identity has not yet been released.
Providence Police Major David Lapatin said drug paraphernalia was found in the apartment, and a male roommate told police she was a drug user.
If the woman’s death is ruled a homicide, it would be the first of two on Tuesday night after a man was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting on Potters Avenue just before midnight.
