FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — A debate was held Wednesday night, as the city of Fall River gears up for their first recall election.
The “Beacon Tavern” hosted the debate, which had Mayor Will Flanagan along with seven other candidates who are vying for city’s top job.
The recall began after a group of citizens said they were dissatisfied with the mayor for implementing a “pay as you throw” garbage fee.
Flanagan was under more scrutiny after City Councilman Jasiel Correia claimed the mayor attempted to intimidate him with a firearm in his car.
At the debate Wednesday night, the mayor responded to all of the criticism.
“(I have) made tough decisions as mayor and as mayor, I’ve always been a leader for this community,” said Mayor Flanagan, “and my heart has always been in the right place for this city.”
Over the course of several appeals, Flanagan has ultimately been allowed to run in the recall election against seven other mayoral candidates:
- Sam Sutter, Bristol County District Attorney
- Shawn Cadime, Former City Administrator
- Michael Miozza, City Councilor
- Dave Dennis, Former City Councilor
- Paul Anderson
- Louis Melim
- Ron Cabral
