PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Providence Police have identified the city’s latest homicide victim.
Police confirm that 22-year-old Anthony Mitchell of New York, who had been living in Lincoln, was gunned down on Hartford Avenue Wednesday afternoon.
The broad daylight shooting happened in front of a meat market and grocery store, just yards away from the Achievement First Mayoral Academy. No children at the school were harmed. The middle school was notified of the shooting, but was not placed under a lockdown.
Police would only describe the suspect as a black man in a dark-hooded sweatshirt. As of Thursday evening, no arrests have been made.
According to a separate police report, Mitchell was the victim of another violent crime less than one month ago. The report states that on November 19, police discovered Mitchell bleeding from his head and face. Mitchell had told investigators he was approached by three subjects from his rear and he was hit in the head. No arrests have been made in that case.
Mitchell is also facing felony charges out of Central Falls, including breaking and entering.
The killing was the 20th homicide in Providence in 2014.
