CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Three people were rushed to the hospital Thursday afternoon following a multi-vehicle crash near the Pontiac Avenue Exit in Cranston.

Crews were called to the area shortly before 12:30 p.m. The wreck closed Route 37 West and the entrance ramp for I-95 for roughly a half hour, Capt. William Jamieson confirmed.

The pileup began when a car stopped suddenly and was rear-ended, sending it into a third vehicle stopped in front. Shortly after, a fourth car collided with the wreck. According to Capt. Jamieson, the middle two vehicles caught on fire.

Sofia Cozzolino was in the initial crash and described the frightening moments.

“We looked in the rear-view mirror and we could see the car behind us was flying so fast and they didn’t see traffic had stopped,” she said. “My sister she was driving she screamed ‘Oh my god that car is going to hit us!’ So we all braced ourselves and she hit us so hard the car went underneath our SUV.”

Three people involved in the crash were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries.
