PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A new study released by an independent research company shows that where you live could play a big role in determining your car insurance rates.
If you live in the East Bay, you will pay some of the cheapest auto insurance rates in the state, the study shows. On average, the cost of car insurance in Rhode Island is $1,785 – with Middletown coming in at 13% under the state average with an annual cost of $1,500.
To determine rates, the study used two sample drivers; a single 30-year-old male and a 65-year-old male driver. Both had good driving records, but that didn’t seem to play a large role in keeping their rates down if they lived in North Providence, which had the highest premiums at about 26% higher then the state’s average.
Other cities with the most expensive car insurance rates include:
- Providence at $2,173
- Cranston at $2,167
- Central Falls at $2,087
- Pawtucket at $2,069
According to the study, Rhode Island ranked among the highest in the nation for car insurance rates, coming in higher than Massachusetts and New York.
