PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — In anticipation of an increase in pedestrian and vehicle traffic in downtown Providence after the Christmas holiday, the city announced Tuesday several changes that will be put in place.
The changes will be in effect Friday, Dec. 26 to Sunday, Dec. 28 from 12 p.m. until 7 p.m.
According to the city, left-turn traffic from the Route 6 East off-ramp to Francis Street will be detoured east on Memorial Boulevard, left on to Exchange Street, and left on to Finance Way.
Any vehicles seeking entrance to the Providence Place Mall will be directed to Park Street. Traffic will be prohibited on Hayes Street, with the exception of right turns from Park Street, which will then be allowed to enter the mall garage.
Traffic exiting the mall on to Park Street will be directed to Promenade Street and left on to Dean Street to access I-95 and Route 6.
The city also said southbound traffic will be prohibited on Francis Street between Smith and Gaspee Streets.
All traffic exiting the north and south Convention Center garages will be detoured as it would be during a major event at the Convention Center or the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. Traffic exiting the north garage will be prompted to turn right and exit on to West Exchange Street, while traffic exiting the south garage will be forced to turn left and exit on to Sabin Street.
