Man to face obstruction charge in Central Falls death investigation

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (WPRI) — Police are investigating after a man’s body was found in Central Falls on Christmas Day.

Police tell Eyewitness News a Providence man was found dead outside of 17 Parker Street from what appears to be a deep cut to his head.

According to Central Falls Police Chief James Mendonca, the victim has been identified as 41-year-old Cheikh Diop. Police aren’t speculating what led to Diop’s death, but his neighbors said he was an immigrant from Senegal who enjoyed working on cars and usually kept to himself.

“I couldn’t believe it. He didn’t seem like no type of gangster or nothing, no hood mentality type,” said Amber Snooks. “Sometimes he’d be with friends, helping them fix their cars. You didn’t hear too much from him, but he was nice when you saw him.”

Another neighbor said Diop’s death is indicative of a much larger problem.

“This is not good. Rhode Island is starting to get a little too dramatic with all these killings, it’s just not good no more,” added Christopher Bourage. “I feel real bad for his family.”

Mendonca later confirmed that Ken Emuakpor, 33, was detained in the case and released with a summons to appear in court January 21 for obstruction.

The medical examiner has performed an autopsy on the victim, but police have not yet released the results of that report.
