Toy monkeys, bean bag chairs recalled due to injury risk

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Thousands of bean bag chairs and toys are being recalled this week because both have hazards that could cause serious injuries to children.

Giggles International is recalling an animated monkey toy because the battery compartment can reach temperatures or up to 230 degrees, posing a severe burn hazard. The company has received two reports of two toys overheating and melting their battery compartments.

Consumers should immediately take the monkey away from children, remove the batteries, and return it to the store where it was purchased for a full refund.

Next, Comfort Research is recalling more than 125,000 bean bag chairs because the zippers can be opened by children, who could then crawl inside, become entrapped, and possibly suffocate or choke on the small beads.

The recall involves vinyl bean bag chairs that were sold nationwide at Burlington Coat Factory and other retailers, including Amazon.com. No injuries have been reported thus far.

Clothing manufacturer BRP is recalling thousands of its Ski-Doo and Can-Am kids hoodies due to a strangulation hazard caused by the drawstring around the neck area. The drawstrings can become entangled or caught on moving objects, such as school buses.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has prohibited drawstrings in children’s coats since 2011. Consumers should take the hoodies away from children and remove the drawstring, or return it for a full refund.

The sweatshirts come in a variety of colors and styles. View the gallery below for which hoodies are affected by the recall.
