PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (WPRI) – About 8,000 people in Portsmouth lost power Sunday morning, according to National Grid.

National Grid spokesman David Graves told Eyewitness News that a problem at a substation on Freeborn Street in Portsmouth at about 9:15 a.m. caused the outage.

There was a report of a fire at the facility, but Graves said that Portsmouth firefighters investigated and found some light smoke, but no actual fire.

Power was restored a few minutes after 11 a.m. but crews continue to investigate the cause of the outage.
