AG seeks old cell phones to benefit domestic violence victims

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI)  — Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Kilmartin is holding a cell phone recycling drive throughout the month of January to benefit victims of domestic violence.

Donated phones will be given to Verizon Wireless’s “Hope Line” program, which provides free phones to people at risk of domestic violence for use in emergency situations.

The cell phone donation drive is normally conducted in October to coincide with Domestic Violence Awareness Month, but the Attorney General’s office moved it to January this year, citing an increase in unused cell phones after the holidays.

Donations are being accepted at the Attorney General’s office in Providence, and court offices in Newport, Warwick, and Wakefield.
