Providence man sentenced in heroin trafficking case

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A 32-year-old Providence man has been sentenced to three years in prison for possession of heroin with the intent to distribute.

Pedro Mercado was sentenced Monday in federal court. U.S. District Chief Judge William Smith also ordered him to serve four years’ supervised release after his prison term.

Federal prosecutors said Mercado was arrested in February 2014 during a heroin trafficking investigation by Providence police and a federal task force.

Prosecutors said the investigation included several heroin purchases from Mercado, and warranted searches of his home and vehicles found 154 grams of heroin and almost $10,000 in cash. They also found materials used to package heroin for sale.

Mercado pleaded guilty in May.
