NEWTON, Mass. (WPRI) – Junior Robert Lewis recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds while playing all 50 minutes to lead the men’s basketball team to a 77-74 double-overtime victory against Lasell in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest on the road on Tuesday evening.
Junior Tom Garrick tallied a team-best 21 points, six rebounds and two assists while junior Quarry Greenaway notched 15 points, three boards, three steals and two assists in the victory for the Wildcats. Freshman Jarell Lawson rounded out the double-digit scorers for JWU with 10 points and five rebounds in the contest.
Pat Marchand paced Lasell with a game-high 25 points and 14 rebounds while Angel Oritz notched 17 points and four boards in the setback for the Lasers.
Johnson & Wales took their first double-digit lead when a layup by Lawson with 8:34 left in the first half gave the Wildcats a 23-12 advantage. JWU continued to control the action in the first half en route to a 41-22 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.
Lasell chipped away at the lead throughout the second half and was able to take the 54-53 lead on a layup by Logan Liberty with 3:48 remaining in regulation. JWU trailed 59-57 nearing the end of the contest before a layup by Greenaway with time expiring sent the game headed into overtime knotted 59-59.
The visiting Wildcats led by as many as four points in the first overtime, but it wasn’t enough as the sixth tie of the game, 67-67 sent the contest into the second five minute overtime session. JWU led from wire to wire throughout the second overtime period en route to the 77-74 victory.
The victory improves JWU to 8-3 overall and 3-1 in the GNAC while Lasell drops to 2-7 and 1-3 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, January 8h when they host GNAC foe St. Joseph’s of Maine in a conference matchup starting at 7:00 p.m.
