PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Firefighters quickly stopped a fire at a gas storage facility on Allens Avenue Saturday night.

Deputy Assistant Fire Chief Joseph Desmarais told Eyewitness News that the fire was reported at the Motiva facility at about 7:30, apparently caused by a malfunctioning pump used to move ethanol.

No fuel was spilled and firefighters had the flames out quickly before they spread.

Desmarais said that a second alarm was called and a number of firefighters and trucks from all over Providence responded, but were held in reserve.

Firefighters were on the scene for about two hours ensuring that it had not spread to any other part of the large facility.

Desmarais said that had the fire spread, the situation could have become much worse; the facility was the scene of a massive fire in July of 2006 when an apparent lightning strike on a tanker ignited fuel at the port, severely damaging it and keeping it inoperative for months.
