PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Junior Quarry Greenaway recorded is fourth double-double of the season with 26 points and 21 rebounds to help give the Johnson & Wales men’s basketball team a 74-48 win over Emmanuel in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at the Wildcat Center on Monday evening.
Junior Tom Garrick (Seekonk, Mass.) also notched a double-double with 16 points and 11 boards while freshman Michael Kiser (Pike Road, Ala.) and freshman Mike Clark (Providence, R.I.) each had eight boards in the victory for the Wildcats.
Junior Kyle Davis (Groveland, Mass.) paced Emmanuel with 15 points and eight rebounds while sophomore Kyle Smith (Los Angeles, Calif.) was also in double-figures with 11 points off the bench in the loss for the Saints.
Johnson & Wales grabbed control of the game early and took their first double-digit lead after a traditional three-point play by Greenaway made the score 20-9 with 10:25 left in the first half. The Wildcats continued to carry the action the remainder of the stanza and took a commanding 39-20 lead heading into halftime. The Wildcats hit on 12-of-26 (42.6%) from the field and forced Emmanuel into 14 turnovers.
The visiting Saints chipped away at the Wildcats lead early in the second half, trimming the lead to 45-37 on a layup by Smith with 12:35 left on the clock. That would be as close as the Saints would get though as JWU pulled away down the stretch en route to the 74-48 victory. JWU dominated the glass, holding a 48-31 advantage in rebounding while holding the Saints to just 32.2% (19-of-59) shooting from the field.
The win was the sixth straight for JWU and lifts the team to a 13-3 overall mark and an 8-1 record in the GNAC while Emmanuel drops to 4-11 on the year and 2-7 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, January 24th when they travel to Norwich for a GNAC matchup starting at 3:00 p.m.
