CANTON, N.Y. – Junior Nick Lappin and senior Joey de Concilys both scored third-period goals, but it was not enough to climb back from an early deficit as the Brown men’s hockey team fell at St. Lawrence, 5-2, Saturday evening at Appleton Arena.

SLU moves to 13-10-2 overall and 9-4-0 in the ECAC, while Brown drops to 4-15 on the season and 1-11 in conference play.

Kyle Hayton stopped 29 shots for the Saints to earn the win, while sophomore Tim Ernst (Pickering, Ontario) made 37 saves for the Bears.

Despite early pressure by Brown to start the contest, the Saints settled in after a few minutes, before two teams killed off back-to-back power-play attempts in the opening half of the first period.

St. Lawrence jumped on the board at 9:35 when Christian Horn scored his fourth tally of the season. Sean McGovern orchestrated the play when he set up behind the net and flipped the puck over the goal to Horn for the quick strike.

Brown was able to kill off another SLU power play at the end of the period, as the Bears used several blocked shots during the stint to keep it a one-goal game at the first intermission. SLU had a 12-8 edge in shots during the first stanza.

The Bears came back with their second power play at 7:48 in the second period, and set up in SLU territory with plenty of zone time in the attempt, but the Saint penalty kill kept the visitors off the board.

St. Lawrence made it a two-goal game midway through the second period when Mike Marnell beat Ernst high stick side to give the Saints a 2-1 lead at the second intermission.

After Joe Sullivan scored at 7:03 in the third to make it 3-0, Lappin put the Bears on the board at 9:10, as he fielded a pass from Matt Lorito (Oakville, Ontario) and blasted a shot from the right circle to cut the lead to two, 3-1.

St. Lawrence extended its lead back up to three when Gunnar Hughes scored at 10:25, but the Bears continued to attack, and it paid off at 15:26 when de Concilys found the back of the net. The defenseman blasted a shot past the reach of Hayton for his fifth tally of the season to keep the Bears within reach, 4-2.

However, the Saints stormed right back as Woody Hudson scored 14 seconds later for the three-goal advantage and eventual victory.

Brown returns to action on Friday, Jan. 31 when they kick off a four-game homestand against Quinnipiac at 7 p.m. Tickets for all Brown men’s hockey games can be purchased online, calling the Brown Athletics Ticket Office at (401) 863-2773, or walking up to the Box Office located in the Pizzitola Sports Center, open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
