Crews tackle New Bedford business fire

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — Firefighters battled a business fire in the single digit temperatures in New Bedford early Wednesday morning.

The fire broke out at a storage facility for Fernandes Masonry on Acushnet Avenue, according to fire officials.

Smoke was seen pouring out from the roof of the business.

Firefighters’ uniforms and helmets were covered in ice trying to fight the blaze. Captain Luke Charbonneau told Eyewitness News that there is a constant battle to keep equipment from seizing in the cold temperatures. Trucks and hoses also had to be maneuvered around snowbanks.

According to the captain, there was nothing out of the ordinary that halted the investigation. He said his crews are trained to handle situations in extreme cold.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
