PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A man charged with sex trafficking was granted bail on Tuesday.
Derek Miranda, 21, of Dorchester, was arrested after three missing Massachusetts girls were found at his residence on Jan.16. The girls, ages 14 and 15, were found after one managed to escape and alert authorities. Miranda reportedly held them against their will with plans to prostitute them.
Two girls were reunited with their families while the other was taken into state custody.
Police said that Miranda enticed the girls into his custody and that they may not have known how dangerous the situation was until it was too late.
“I don’t think they realized where they were going before it was too late,” said Providence Police Major David Lapatin.
Miranda faced a judge on Jan. 20, where he was ordered held without bail on charges of sex trafficking and kidnapping.
He faced a judge again Tuesday; his bail was set for $75,000.
