REHOBOTH, Mass. (WPRI) — According to East Providence Police, two suspects have been arrested by the Rehoboth Police Department after abandoning their car in Rehoboth during a police pursuit.
East Providence police said they pulled the gold Mercedes over at about 4 p.m. on I-195 East, but the driver took off. Officers gave chase, but called off the pursuit and contacted Massachusetts State Police once the vehicle crossed the border.
The suspects were met with traffic backup between Exits 1 and 2 caused by two separate crashes. Mass. State Police spoke with witnesses, who said the Mercedes began backing up on the highway then attempted to cross the center median, before getting stuck in the snow.
Initially it was believed the suspects may have caused the crashes.
Police said the two suspects fled the vehicle, crossing the westbound travel lanes on foot.
Traffic remained backed up on 195 as a result of the crashes for several hours. Two people, one involved in each crash, were taken to Rhode Island Hospital with minor injuries.
Massachusetts State Police troopers, K-9 units, and an Air Wing unit assisted in the search, along with Rehoboth, Seekonk and Swansea police.
