KINGSTON, R.I. — Jared Terrell was tabbed as the CBSSports.com/Wayman Tisdale Award National Freshman of the Week on Tuesday, Feb. 3.
CBSSports.com, the INTEGRIS Wayman Tisdale Freshman of the Year Award, and the United States Basketball Writers Association have teamed up to sponsor a weekly feature on some of the best freshmen in the country. Terrell was the 10th player to earn National Freshman of the Week honors, joining fellow frosh standouts Stanley Johnson (Arizona), Tyus Jones and Jahlil Okafor (Duke), Elijah Stewart (USC), Tyler Ulis (Kentucky), Kevin Looney (UCLA), and D’Angelo Russell (Ohio State).
Additionally, Terrell earned both the ECAC (Feb. 3) and Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week (Feb. 2) awards, after leading the Rams in scoring in two key conference wins. The 6-3 guard averaged 17.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 4.0 steals in two games, while shooting 55.0 percent (11-for-20) from the floor and 90.9 percent from the charity stripe (10-of-11).
The Weymouth, Mass. native led Rhody with 18 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals in the thrilling Jan. 28 win at Fordham. Eleven of his 18 points came in the second half versus the Rams.
Last time out against George Washington, Terrell had 13 of his 17 points in the second half and made all seven of his free throws, helping to seal the victory. Defensively, he notched a season-high six steals in 29 minutes of play.
Over his last three games, Terrell is averaging 17.0 points per game, having tallied a career-best 19 points vs. St. Bonaventure on Jan. 25. Terrell ranks sixth among all A-10 freshmen in scoring, at 9.6 points per game. It marks the first time Terrell has been named A-10 Rookie of the Week.
Terrell and the Rams return to action on Sunday, Feb. 8 at Richmond. The game tips off at 2:30 p.m. and the game will be nationally televised on NBC Sports Network.
