BOSTON (WPRI) – The Johnson and Wales men’s basketball team posted a 79-61 victory against Emmanuel College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at the Jean Yawkey Center on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Quarry Greenaway scored a game-high 26 and added seven rebounds to lead the way for Johnson & Wales. Junior Tom Garrick (Seekonk, Mass.) and freshman Jarell Lawson each netted 12 points to help pace the Wildcats.
Emmanuel was led by Kyle Davis (Groveland, Mass.) who finished with 17 points to lead the Saints.
JWU capitalized on its full-court zone pressure and transition game, building an early 17-8 lead, behind eight quick points in the first six minutes of play from Greenaway. The Wildcats made it a 21-8 game after forcing Emmanuel’s eighth turnover in less than eight minutes of action. Greenaway connected on an old-fashioned three-point play to make it a twenty-point game, 37-17 with 3:53 left to play in the half. The Wildcats took the 42-23 advantage heading into the locker room. JWU forced 14 first-half turnovers and held Emmanuel to just eight field goals in the opening frame.
The Wildcats continued to control the action the rest of the way. Sophomore Tyler Russ (Stratham, N.H.) connected on a three to bring Emmanuel back to within twelve, down 61-49, but it wouldn’t be enough as JWU held on for the 79-61 win.
With the win, JWU improves to 17-4 overall and 12-2 in GNAC action. Emmanuel drops to 7-12 on the season and 5-8 in league play. The Wildcats return to action this Tuesday, February 10th when they travel to Anna Maria College for a 7:00 p.m. start
