PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – The men’s ice hockey team has secured the third-seed for the upcoming ECAC Northeast Championship. The Wildcats will host an opening round contest on Saturday, February 28th at Lynch Arena/BVSC starting at 6:15 p.m. The opponent for the game will be determined based on tomorrow’s result between Western New England and Suffolk.
Sophomore Ben Brouillard (Somerset, Mass.) (10 goals, 12 assists) and senior Jason Healey (Goshen, N.Y.) (3 goals, 19 assists) are tied for the team lead in points for the season at 22 while sophomore Drew Kariofiles (Cincinnati, Ohio) has tallied six goals and 11 assists for 17 points on the year. Four of his six goals have been game-winners for JWU which ranks him seventh in the country.
The Wildcats have a balanced scoring attack this season as 11 players have notched at least 10 points, including sophomore Fran Mackin (Philadelphia, Pa.) with eight goals and eight assists for 18 points while fellow sophomore Stefan Brucato (Lake Elsinore, Calif.) has six goals and nine assists for 15 points on the year.
Defensively, the Wildcats have one of the top back lines in the country as the team ranks seventh in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 2.0 per game for the season.
Sophomore goalie Joey Ballmer (Kalamazoo, Mich.) has posted a 1.81 goals against average with a .941 save percentage. In conference play, he has been even better with a 1.53 goals against average and a .952 save percentage. He currently ranks 11 nationally in GAA and second nationally in save percentage for this season.
Johnson & Wales has a 14-10-1 record on the year with an 8-6 mark in league play to secure the third spot in the conference championship.
