PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — If you’ve got a fax machine lying around your home and you’re looking to sell it or throw it out – it’s important to first make sure it’s safe to do so.
Many fax machines store personal information that could end up in the wrong hands if not disposed of properly.
eLoop, one of the largest certified recyclers of e-waste in Pennsylvania, said some of the items that come through are loaded with personal data. All someone has to do is open them up, pull out a ribbon, and they can read anything that went through the machine – including credit card numbers, phone numbers and addresses.
Call 12 for Action purchased several fax machines from Craigslist, and found that all contained personal information.
Bottom line – if you want to make sure your old fax machine is properly disposed of, take it to an electronic recycling firm to have them check it out and wipe your personal information.
