Recovery begins for Seekonk businesses after fire

SEEKONK, Mass. (WPRI) — Owners of several businesses were seen picking up the pieces Monday morning after flames ripped through a Seekonk strip mall the night before.

The flames broke out some time around 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the plaza along Route 6, and every business was affected in some capacity. Some just received smoke damage and will be temporarily closed, while an unlucky few were completely torched.

The owner of the Liberty Tax location there said the fire couldn’t have come at a worse time, since this is peak business time for tax offices.

“There’s 43 days left in the tax season, this is not something we were anticipating whatsoever,” said Lori Bedrosian.

“I’m just sorry to see this happen,” added Paul Pliakas, also of Liberty Tax. “I’m sure we’ll recover and reopen and everything will be fine, but it’s a shock to wake up and see the building burned up. It really is.”

Liberty Tax is right next door to Bead and Wire, where investigators believe the fire started, but the exact cause remains under investigation.

Despite the damage to Liberty Tax, Bedrosian said they were able to get the personal records of all their clients out safely.
