Deal reached in Providence bus driver contract dispute

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A deal has been reached to avert a school bus driver strike in Providence.

A Teamsters Local 251 representative, Nick Williams, confirmed on Wednesday that a contract agreement has been reached with First Student Bus Company.

According to Williams, the deal includes pay raises and higher guaranteed hours per shift for all workers — retroactive to last July.

Under the new contract, Williams said a new bus driver would start at $16.98 per hour and the top rate after 5 years would be $25.39 per hour.

The Teamsters had threatened to strike last month, before entering a 21-day cooling off period for further negotiations.
