CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Budgets are strained in many Rhode Island cities and towns, if not already depleted. Cranston is already more than a quarter of a million dollars in the red, but they’re taking action citywide to ensure they don’t dig themselves into a hole they can’t get out of.
Cranston Mayor Allan Fung has issued an executive order having all departments stop any non-essential spending to try and reign in some of the cost.
“Mostly storms have hit us on the weekend. So, right off the bat, contractually, we’re able to pay overtime,” Carlos Lopez Estrada, Mayor Fung’s Chief of Staff said.
To get some of the money back, the city said they will now watch their spending on everything from office supplies to overtime. The mayor’s office said they will not cut corners on public safety, though.
