Fall River police arrest suspected shooter at Maple Gardens

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — Fall River police responded to reports of a shooting at building 27 at the Maple Gardens housing complex.

Officers arrived on scene just after 6 p.m. Thursday, to witness the suspect fleeing on foot. After a brief pursuit, 21-year-old Christopher Swindell was apprehended by police.

A 22-year-old victim was shot in the abdomen after an argument took place with the alleged shooter. A male witness claimed that after the victim was shot, he attempted to grab the gun away from Swindell, according to police.

Swindell reportedly bit the witness in the arm and fled on foot.

Police were able to locate the .22 cal handgun used in an outside hallway of the building.

Swindell had outstanding warrants for unarmed robbery of a person over 60, drug possession and shoplifting.

He also faces in the latest incident an armed assault to murder, several assault related charges and illegal weapons charges.

The victim was transported to Rhode Island Hospital.

He is listed in critical condition.
