CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — An inmate “erroneously released” from the ACI Friday has turned himself in, the Rhode Island Department of Corrections announced Saturday morning.

Alan Ferreira, 46, was apparently released from the prison by mistake. He had recently been sentenced to serve a year behind bars for violating a no contact order.

“When we learned of this internal error last night, we immediately notified the Rhode Island State Police, the RISP Fugitive Task Force, the Cranston Police Department, and the Woonsocket Police Department for victim notification,” said Susan Lamkins spokeswoman for the RIDOC.

Lamkins said that Ferreira returned to the ACI Intake Center Saturday morning and turned himself in. An extensive internal investigation is now underway to determine why Ferreira was released from the prison.

According to records from the Department of Corrections, Ferreira has a lengthy criminal past dating back to the 1980s. He’s faced charges that include domestic strangulation, assault, and drug possession.
