NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — The door could be closing on plans for a proposed New Bedford casino.
According to Mayor Jon Mitchell, a $65,000 “feasibility study” found that a waterfront casino would have a negative impact on the Port of New Bedford and the surrounding downtown area.
The study was paid for by the proposed developer of the casino, KG Urban Enterprises.
Mayor Mitchell says the developer must adjust its plans to the city’s needs in order to move forward with its proposal.
“The city would be willing to support a casino proposal so long as on balance it advances the city’s long term economic interests,” he said.
A representative from KG Urban, on the other hand, blames Mayor Mitchell for the deal’s demise.
The company says that Mitchell “wanted to take almost half the site including the waterfront acreage.”
