PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – The Johnson and Wales baseball team suffered a 7-2 setback against Muhlenberg at the Ripken Experience on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Andrew Hunton (Monroe, N.Y.) paced Johnson & Wales with a 3-for-5 performance and an RBI while senior Kory Ferullo (Rochester, N.H.) and junior Jordan Pilarski (Garnet Valley, Pa.) each had a pair of hits in the setback for the Wildcats. Sophomore Ryan Cabral (Hope, R.I.) took the loss on the mound for JWU, allowing six runs on 11 hits in five innings of work.
Sophomore Robert Hopes (Massapequa, N.Y.) led Muhlenberg, going 3-for-4 with two RBI while fellow sophomore John Icaza (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) went 2-for-3 with three runs scored in the win for the Mules. Senior Christian Ferlan (Litchfield, N.H.) picked up the win for Muhlenberg, allowing two unearned runs on seven hits in five innings of work.
Muhlenberg led 2-1 heading into the top of the second before tacking on three runs, including a two-run single by Hopes to push the lead to 5-1. After a run for the Mules in the top of the fourth, Johnson & Wales cut into the advantage and made the score 6-2 on an RBI single by Pilarski. That would be as close as the Wildcats would get, however as Muhlenberg added an insurance run in the seventh en route to the 7-2 victory.
With the setback Johnson & Wales is now 2-3 for the year while Muhlenberg is 4-4 on the season. The Wildcats will wrap up the annual southern trip against Penn College on Sunday, March 8th at 9:00 a.m.
