JOHNSTON, R.I. (WPRI) – Rhode Island State Police have confirmed to Eyewitness News that the cause of a car that caught fire Sunday afternoon bringing traffic to a crawl on Route 6 in Johnston, was from a flat tire.
Troopers said five people were riding inside of a Chevy Tracker around 3 p.m. heading eastbound on Route 6 near Killingly Street when the rubbing of the vehicle’s flat tire on the ground ignited a fire.
All five people exited the vehicle safely. Police said the driver was taken to a nearby hospital for smoke inhalation as a precaution.
Johnston fire crews extinguished the flames from the car.
The two left lanes were shut down for an hour as traffic passed in the right lane.
