PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The driver arrested following a wrong-way crash on Route 6 in Providence Thursday morning is due in court for arraignment on multiple charges.
State police say Eugene Rodriguez Barberan, 26, of Providence was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.
The 911 call came in around 5:25 a.m. for reports of a wrong-way driver and crash.
Troopers said Rodriguez Barberan was driving west on the eastbound side of the highway when his vehicle crashed into a pickup truck traveling in the high-speed lane.
The driver of the pickup, Anthony Figueroa, 21, of Providence and his passenger, Melvin Jranados, 50, of Providence were both taken to Rhode Island Hospital for non-life threatening injuries, troopers said.
Rodriguez Barberan is due in Providence District Court for arraignment Thursday on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs 1st offense BAC .15 or greater; driving to endanger – physical injury; reckless driving; and driving without a license.
Just last weekend, a Central Falls woman was killed when the car she was in was traveling in the wrong direction and struck another vehicle on I-95 in Pawtucket. The driver in that case was also charged with driving under the influence.
