JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Junior Jake Levine hit a pair of home runs in the second game, but the Brown baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at North Florida, 15-12 and 9-4, on Saturday at Harmon Stadium.
Brown moves to 1-8 overall, while North Florida improves to 13-8 on the season.
Game 1 (UNF 15, Brown 12)
In the first game, sophomore Robert Henry (Cranston, R.I.) and senior Dan Kerr (Westfield, N.J.) paced the Bears with three hits apiece, while three other players posted multi-hit games.
Senior Eddie Fitzpatrick (North Attleboro, Mass.) went five innings and gave up eight runs to take the loss. Tyler Dupont earned the win for the Ospreys behind three earned runs over six frames.
North Florida raced out to an early lead with five runs in the first, before the Bears responded with two runs over the net two innings to trim the deficit to three, 5-3. Brown added another run in the top of the fourth when Joshua Huntley (Aurora, Colo.) tripled to left center to send in Marc Sredojevic (Medham, N.J.) to pull within two.
Nevertheless, the Ospreys responded with three runs in the fifth, and six more runs in the sixth and seventh to make it 14-3.
After the Bears scored three runs in the eighth, North Florida took back one run in the bottom half of the frame, but the Bears refused to go down quietly with six runs in the top of the ninth. Brown had five hits in the inning to pull within three, but the Ospreys secured a final fly out to secure the victory.
Game 2 (UNF 9, Brown 4)
In the second game, Levine hit a pair of home runs, while Huntley also had two hits and one RBI. Junior Kevin Guthrie (Sarasota, Fla.) went seven innings on the mound for the Bears, allowing two earned runs with four strikeouts, while Chris Smith (Colleyville, Texas) took the loss in relief.
North Florida opened up the scoring with two runs in the second, but the Bears answered back with one run in the third, when Levine homered down the right field line. Levine homered again in the fifth with a solo shot to right, before Huntley added an RBI double to left center in the sixth to push the Bears in front, 3-2.
After Tim McKeithan (Arden, N.C.) scored on a wild pitch in the seventh, the Ospreys responded with one run in the bottom half when Garrick Ferguson singled through the left side to keep it a one-run game. North Florida carried over its momentum in the seventh inning, using three hits and one error to score six runs to move in front, 9-4. Noah Shulman (Merrick, N.Y.) singled in the ninth, but it was not enough, as the Ospreys sealed the victory.
Brown and North Florida wrap up the four-game set in Sunday at 1 p.m.
