NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) — Organizers of Newport’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade vowed to hold the even no matter what Mother Nature had in store. They kept their promise.
Thousands lined the streets of the City By The Sea on Saturday to take part in the 59th annual parade.
“It’s an awesome parade. It shows the tradition of the Irish. We just love it,” Tom Prochazka said. “I think it just bring the whole island together.”
Parents say they felt safe bringing their children to the parade, saying there are always plenty of families — and those partying in the crowd weren’t too rowdy.
“It’s a little mix of both. There’s not a lot of inebriated people here. There are some, but not enough that it creates the wrong impression on our kids,” Michael Fortenberry told Eyewitness News.
During last year’s celebration, police made 101 arrests. Most of those were for alcohol related offenses. Newport Police have not said how many arrests were made this year.
