Site of motel meth bust has history of police activity

WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — When police were called to the Motel 6 on Jefferson Boulevard late Sunday night, it wasn’t the first time officers had been to the business this year. In fact, Eyewitness News went digging and found there have been dozens of police calls to the motel just this year alone.

Three men were arrested in the most recent case; two of them accused of operating a meth lab out of their motel room. In addition, the motel evacuated the building as a precaution so crews could decontaminate.

Eyewitness News checked police records and found there have been 100 calls for service at the motel and seven arrests since January 1 of this year. Three of the arrests were Sunday night. The other four were for domestic assault, driving on a suspended or revoked license, and an arrest on a bench warrant.

But the trouble history at the Motel 6 doesn’t end there.

Back in 2006, a Baltimore man was arrested and charged with killing his girlfriend inside the motel.

Police said three years later, two men were blindfolded at the motel after being kidnapped. One of them got away and called for help.

In the last nine years, police have made several arrests at the motel, including one last year, in which a Cranston man was brought into custody after a 90-minute standoff with police. In 2013, officers arrested two robbery suspects from Georgia.

In 2011, police made a massive drug bust at the motel and officers responded to a report of money stolen from a car in 2009.

Rhode Island State Police said the motel’s position right off the exit on I-95 makes it particularly vulnerable to crime and that people come in off the highway, carry out illicit activity at the motel, and then take off.

A manager at the motel says the bust Sunday night should send the message that the motel won’t tolerate criminal activity.
