RI state trooper crashes cruiser

CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — A Rhode Island State Trooper is recovering after crashing his cruiser on Friday night.

Authorities say Trooper Nicholas Martin was responding to an accident on 295 South in Cranston Friday evening. Suddenly, the driver in the car ahead of the trooper hit their brakes. In effort to avoid a collision, Trooper Martin swerved and hit the snow-covered shoulder of the highway. He then lost control of the vehicle, and went off the road — getting stuck in heavy brush, and striking several small trees.

Trooper Martin was treated at Rhode Island Hospital, and has since been released. Investigators say icy road conditions may have played a role in the crash.

“The safety of our Troopers is our number one priority. By wearing his seat belt, Trooper Martin set the example of and avoided serious injury,” Colonel Steven O’Donnell said in a news release.
