KINGSTON, R.I. – Rhode Island freshman Jordan Powell has been named the Atlantic 10’s Rookie of the Week, for games played through March 22. The honor is the first of his career.
A Kingwood, Texas native, Powell opened Atlantic 10 play on a tear, hitting an even .600 (6-10) in URI’s series at Saint Louis. In Sunday’s finale, he went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs.
Overall, he recorded seven hits, four RBI, two stolen bases and one run scored over URI’s five games last week. He reached base safely at least once in each game and combined for 13 putouts in centerfield.
Powell is the third Rhody player to be recognized by the conference this season as classmate Tyler Wilson was last week’s Rookie of the Week and Lou Distasio was selected as Co-Pitcher of the Week on March 2.
