Cranston police investigate Saturday night shooting

Detectives and BCI are on scene of a shooting.

CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) – Cranston police are investigating after a man was shot outside a store on Dyer Avenue Saturday night.

In a news release issued Sunday morning, Captain Sean Carmody reported that officers headed to the Tuma Mini Mart at 341 Dyer Avenue at about 8 p.m. Saturday for a report of a shooting. There they found 22 year-old Fuad Yusuf inside the store suffering from two gunshot wounds.

Witnesses told police that Yusuf was inside the store, then went outside and approached a vehicle that was parked nearby. He reportedly knocked on the window and someone fired opened the driver’s side door and fired at him, hitting him twice.

Yusuf was hit in the right shoulder and left forearm, and was later taken to Rhode Island Hospital by the Cranston Fire Department for treatment. His injuries are not life-threatening, according to police.

Carmody did not release the identity of the suspected shooter but said that Yusuf and that person have a “prior relationship.” Carmody said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
