GLOCESTER, R.I. (WPRI) – A Glocester police officer is recovering after her cruiser was struck head-on by a suspected drunk driver.

Captain Joseph Mattera of the Glocester Police Department told Eyewitness News that the crash happened in the area of 750 Putnam Pike – the White Rock Motel – at about 10:15 Friday night.

The cruiser, driven by Sergeant Kimberly Bertholic, was going east when a pickup truck heading in the opposite direction crossed the center line and struck the cruiser head-on.

The driver of the pickup, 50 year-old David Deschepper, was charged with driving under the influence and refusal to submit to a chemical test. The injuries he suffered in the crash are not life-threatening, according to police.

Deschepper’s listed address is also 750 Putnam Pike, Mattera said.

Bertholic, a 16-year veteran of the department, was treated at Rhode Island Hospital and subsequently released.
