FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) – More than a thousand people participated in an annual road race to honor a fallen Fall River police officer Sunday.
Officer Thomas Giunta was killed on August 24, 1994, while handing out free street parking permits to residents on Middle Street before a Portuguese feast. A man who answered the door at one of the homes on the street attacked Giunta and killed him with his own gun.
The suspect was eventually sentenced to life without parole.
Sunday, about 1,100 runners participated in the 21st Annual Officer Giunta 5k Road Race, the proceeds of which benefit a memorial scholarship fund which was established in his name.
Last April, the city dedicated a park at the corner of Bank and O’Grady Streets in Giunta’s honor.
Giunta’s son Tim later joined the Fall River Police Department.
